★★★★☆

A Dead Djinn in Cairo by P. Djèlí Clark is a novella about an alternate universe set in Cairo in 1912 where ghouls and angels live in this world.
I read this as a Kindle checked out from the county library.
Fatma is a special detective investigating the death of a djinn who has been drained of blood. What at first appears to be a suicide evolves into something darker. Fatma's investigation takes her to the death of an angel being consumed by ghouls and on to the uncovering of a plot to end the world.
Coming in at 36 pages, this novella definitely left me wanting more, which is the only reason it got 4 stars. This book is the first glimpse at a universe created by Clark and developed more fully in other books. A great introduction!
I have also read The Haunting of Tram Car 015 by Clark and am looking forward to his first full length novel set in this universe titled, A Master of Djinn. My favorite work by Clark to date is still Ring Shout.
If you liked A Dead Djinn in Cairo, I also recommend Big Machine by Victor LaValle, Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James, Revival by Stephen King, and A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman.
Happy reading!
