A Master of Djinn by P. Djèlí Clark is a fantasy mystery novel about an alternate universe in Cairo 1912 where magic, ghosts, and ghouls exist and a special unit that enforces the law in relation to this new phenomenon.
I checked this book out from the library.
Agent Fatma is one of the only women working for the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments, and Supernatural Entities and one of the best detectives. She gets assigned to a case where a room full of people were burned to death…but their clothes remained un-scorched. An imposter of al-Jahiz, the man who released magic 50 years ago, claims he committed the crime. Now Fatma, along with her new partner Hadia and Siti, her lover, must find the imposter before he destroys the world as they know it.
Clark is a fantastic writer. His ability to world build is nearly unparalleled to any other author I’ve read. The action scenes are also just so good. Shockingly, this is his first full length novel, which has allowed for more character and plot development in a way his novellas were simply unable to. I’m a mega fan and strongly recommend you check this, or any of his work, out!
I have also read Ring Shout and The Haunting of Tram Car 015 and A Dead Djinn in Cairo by this author. The 2 latter works are novellas set in the same universe as this with the same characters which is fun. You can read Clark's work on Tor.com
If you liked A Master of Djinn, I also recommend Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff, Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James, A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman, and Big Machine by Victor LaValle.
Happy reading -
