Before the Coffee Gets Cold (Click Here To Buy)

★★★☆☆

Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi is a fiction book about a cafe where you can go back in time.

I checked this book out from the library, but then it was due before I could finish it but the county library came in clutch with an available eBook version, which allowed me to finish the book.

The book is broken into four chapters, each a separate story with a different main character from the cafe. In the first story, we are introduced to the concept of the café as a place you can travel back in time as well as the rules including which chair you have to sit in and the necessity to return before the coffee gets cold. A woman travels back in time to speak with her ex only to learn that she cannot change anything. Next we hear from a woman who wants to go back in time to speak with her husband before he had Alzheimer's. After that, a woman grapples with not speaking with her sister before she suddenly passes away and finally a woman wishes for the chance to speak to her unborn daughter.

The concept of this book is very original, but it's application is somewhat simple. I liked how it was essentially a series of short stories set in the same universe. Apparently there is also a second book with stories from four new customers.

If you liked Before the Coffee Gets Cold, I also recommend Midnight Library by Matt Haig, Finna by Nino Cipri, Kindred by Octavia Butler, and Tokyo Ueno Station by Yu Miri.

Happy reading,

About Me

IMG_1517.jpg

Ms.Bjork here and I love reading.  Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed the company of a good book.  Books are also a way that I get through the stress of living - nothing like escaping in a good story!  My career as a mental health counselor can be very intense at times - reading and running are the two main ways that I utilize self-care to support my own mental health and wellbeing.  Before starting this blog, in 2020 I read 128 books.  At the end of the year, I was like Dang, that's a lot of books! How can I get out there and tell people what I think? And so Ms.Bjork Reads was born.
