Big Machine (Click Here To Buy)

★★★★☆ (4.5 Stars)

Big Machine by Victor LaValle is a fiction book about a group of Unlikely Scholars who have been called together in search of paranormal evidence.

I checked this ebook out from the library and read it on my Kindle.

The main character is Ricky Rice, a struggling and recovering heroin addict who gets called to a mysterious library in Vermont created by a runaway slave. Rice's his new job is searching newspaper clippings for odd situations that relate to hearing spiritual voices. After some time, Rice gets called on assignment with "The Lady in Grey," a former prostitute who survived a serial killer attack, in order to track down an Unlikely Scholar who has gone rogue.

One thing I love about this book is the characters. Yeah they've done some bad things, but that doesn't make them bad people. Learning more about their histories creates a fuller picture in order to understand who they are and the decisions they make. Another thing I am discovering that I love about LaValle's writing is the wide scope the narrative takes. You start out in one place, but you are not going to be able to guess how the book will evolve. Major themes of the book center around race, morals, and doubt.

I have also read The Changeling by LaValle. It was the best book I read last year. I highly recommend it. The next book I want to read by LaValle is The Devil in Silver.

If you liked Big Machine, I also recommend Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James, The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay, The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones, and Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark.

happy reading -

About Me

IMG_1517.jpg

Ms.Bjork here and I love reading.  Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed the company of a good book.  Books are also a way that I get through the stress of living - nothing like escaping in a good story!  My career as a mental health counselor can be very intense at times - reading and running are the two main ways that I utilize self-care to support my own mental health and wellbeing.  Before starting this blog, in 2020 I read 128 books.  At the end of the year, I was like Dang, that's a lot of books! How can I get out there and tell people what I think? And so Ms.Bjork Reads was born.
