Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants (Click Here To Buy)

★★★★★

Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer is a non-fiction about our relationship to the earth written through both personal and scientific stories.

I read this as both an audiobook on loan from the library read by the author in tandem with a beautiful hardcover edition purchased from Powell’s. THIS IS A BOOK YOU NEED TO OWN.

Kimmerer is a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation as well as a botanist and professor of plant ecology. In her book, she alternates between indigenous stories including the creation story of Skywoman on Turtle Island and the greedy Wendigo - to scientific research conducted with salamanders and estuary restoration. Kimmerer seamlessly transitions between science and culture weaving a tapestry that emphasizes the earth as a gift and our extreme need and obligation to be better citizens of our planet.

This book taught me so much and I am grateful to have read it - knowing I will revisit it time and again. This is one of the books I would categorize under REQUIRED READING - believe me, you will thank yourself for reading it and the world will be a better place because of it.

If you liked Braiding Sweetgrass, I also recommend Trauma Stewardship by Laura Van Dernoot Lipsky, My Grandmother’s Hands by Resmaa Menakem, Breath by James Nestor, and Spirit Run by Noe Alvarez. When looking for recommendations, this book helped me to see that I need to read more indigenous works - so tell me your favorite books by native authors!

Happy reading 🌿

About Me

IMG_1517.jpg

Ms.Bjork here and I love reading.  Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed the company of a good book.  Books are also a way that I get through the stress of living - nothing like escaping in a good story!  My career as a mental health counselor can be very intense at times - reading and running are the two main ways that I utilize self-care to support my own mental health and wellbeing.  Before starting this blog, in 2020 I read 128 books.  At the end of the year, I was like Dang, that's a lot of books! How can I get out there and tell people what I think? And so Ms.Bjork Reads was born.
