★★★☆☆

Breath by James Nestor is a non-fiction book about the history of breathing and how breathing a certain way can benefit humans.
I read this as an audiobook on loan from the library. The book was read by the author. It's unlikely I would have finished reading this book if it was not being read to me.
This book was very interesting and it definitely brought a greater awareness to my breathing. The simplest takeaway from the book is try to breathe through your nose more. I think I do a pretty good job of this and I definitely don’t have any of the medical conditions that the author has, but it was still useful information and a good reminder. Another recommendation from the book is to exhale more. A technique discussed is to count to 10 as fast as you can over and over again until you run out of breath and then to keep doing it. When I do this, I think about “getting the cobwebs” out of my lungs. Tummo breathing, the skulls of ancient humans under France, and curing diseases through breathing are also discussed.
If you liked Breath, I also recommend In Defense of Food by Michael Pollen, Born to Run by Christopher McDougall, Stiff by Mary Roach, and Burnout by Emily Nagoski.
I’m going to be reading Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker soon and I bet you $5 I recommend this book in that review.
