Building A Life Worth Living (Click Here To Buy)

★★★★★

Building A Life Worth Living by Marsha Linehan is a memoir about the woman who created Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).

I checked out this audiobook out from the library.

Marsha tells her story including her history as a young adult in a psychiatric facility and her struggle with suicidal ideation. She discusses how as she got older, it became her goal to help others who also struggled with these issues. DBT is a unique therapy that balances accepting one’s self and embracing change. Marsha describes how techniques such as DEAR MAN (Describe, Express, Assert, and Reinforce) and Tipp Skills (Temperature, Intense exercise, Paced breathing, and Paired muscle relaxation) came to be - as well as how they work with patients.

As a Mental Health Professional, I learned about DBT in school. Reading Marsha’s memoir placed this technique in such a different context that now I want to get DBT certified! Aside from my clinical interests, it was also a powerful memoir in its own right.

One of my favorite quotes was “If you want to get out of hell, you have to get through the fire to the other side."

If you liked Building A Life Worth Living, I also recommend Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen, An Unquiet Mind by Kay Redfield Jamison, Memories, Dreams, Reflections by Carl G Jung, and The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath.

Happy reading,

Ms.Bjork

About Me

IMG_1517.jpg

Ms.Bjork here and I love reading.  Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed the company of a good book.  Books are also a way that I get through the stress of living - nothing like escaping in a good story!  My career as a mental health counselor can be very intense at times - reading and running are the two main ways that I utilize self-care to support my own mental health and wellbeing.  Before starting this blog, in 2020 I read 128 books.  At the end of the year, I was like Dang, that's a lot of books! How can I get out there and tell people what I think? And so Ms.Bjork Reads was born.
