Dear Senthuran: A Black Spirit Memoir by Akwaeke Emezi is a memoir about a modern non-binary Nigerian author.

I checked this book out from the library.

Emezi has led a unique life. They identify as an ogbanje, which is an Igbo spirit. In this memoir they talk about their experience transitioning into their true self. Their first book, Freshwater was also a memoir of sorts, however this book is a memoir in a more traditional sense. Emezi tells their story through letters to others. Each chapter is written to a different person in Emezi's life about a different stage in their growth and story. Like Emezi's other work, it's their style that really shines through. They have such a unique perspective on the world and a very beautiful way of bringing it into words. Emazi also devotes a significant part of the memoir to the time just after they had written their first book and the behind-the-scenes experiences writers have in regard to book deals, etc., which is interesting because I don't know a lot about that process. I'm a huge fan of Emezi and can't wait to read what they write next.

I have read everything that Emezi has written: Freshwater, Pet, and The Death of Vivek Oji. They are all 5 stars and I highly recommend each one of them. Emezi is a powerful force.

If you liked Dear Senthuran, I also recommend In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado, Marbles by Ellen Forney, Inferno by Catherine Cho, and Care Work by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha.

About Me

IMG_1517.jpg

Ms.Bjork here and I love reading.  Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed the company of a good book.  Books are also a way that I get through the stress of living - nothing like escaping in a good story!  My career as a mental health counselor can be very intense at times - reading and running are the two main ways that I utilize self-care to support my own mental health and wellbeing.  Before starting this blog, in 2020 I read 128 books.  At the end of the year, I was like Dang, that's a lot of books! How can I get out there and tell people what I think? And so Ms.Bjork Reads was born.
