Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters is a novel about pregnancy and the transgender community.
I read this a book checked out from the library.
Ames was living as a transgender woman for years and dating Reece before he decided to detransition and start living as a man again. During this time he began sleeping with his boss, Katrina. Ames believed he was sterile due to years of estrogen shots, but when Katrina announces she’s pregnant, Ames is forced to look at some hard truths including whether he feels like he has to chose between being a father or being a transgender woman. Ames brings Reece into the story, proposing a modern family where the three of them raise this unborn child.
This book was somewhat unexpectedly phenomenal. The depth of the conversations about transgender women’s experiences, struggles, and desires was so well written, I was blown away. It’s important to have tough conversations and this book was a great model for what that can look like in a specific situation.
If you liked Detransition, Baby, I also recommend The Mothers by Brit Bennett, The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi, An American Marriage by Tayari Jones, and Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl by Andrea Lawlor.
