★★★★☆

Disappearance at Devil's Rock by Paul Tremblay is a horror novel about a boy who goes missing.
I read this as an audiobook checked out from the library.
Elizabeth is woken out of her sleep by her landline to learn that her son, Tommy, is missing. For the next several days, she tries to figure out what happened to him and where he is. Tommy's friends, Luis and Josh, initially state they snuck out to the park at night, and then Tommy just disappeared, but as the days go by, the plot thickens, and it comes to light that Luis and Josh were not telling the whole truth. Concurrently, strange things start happening in Tommy's house including his diary pages appearing on the living room floor in the morning and Elizabeth seeing a ghostly version of Tommy crouched in a dark corner. What happened that night in the woods? Read this book and you'll find out!
I really love Paul Tremblay's work, this is probably my least favorite read of his, but I still enjoyed it. The police procedural aspects worked well with the mysterious twinged with supernatural implications. The twist ended up being a little more sad than scary, but I'd say it's still worth your time.
I have also read A Head Full of Ghosts, The Cabin at the End of the World, and Growing Things by this author and I recommend them all.
If you liked Disappearance at Devil's Rock, I also recommend The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King, The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones, Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes, and Leaving Atlanta by Tayari Jones.
Happy reading ⛰
