Ghost Story (Click Here To Buy)

★★★☆☆

Ghost Story by Peter Straub is a horror book about shapeshifting, long-living evil creatures.

I bought this book from Powell's because Stephen King said it was scary.

Four old white men gather in fancy attire to tell each other scary stories so they can keep their darker fears at bay. When one by one the men start dying, they must finally confront the worst thing they've ever done. With the help of their dead friend's nephew, who is battling his own demons, along with a high school boy, they decide to hunt down the evil that has been haunting them all for generations.

I know we're past spooky season, but it took me a bit longer to finish due to the snore factor. Parts of this book were excellent - there were some very scary dream sequences and plot lines, the issue I had was everything in between was just boring. I feel like 200 pages of this book could have been edited out. Also, the characters are all privileged white men - even the women were stereotyped and underdeveloped. Still glad I read it since it's one of the King's faves but def not keeping in my permanent collection.

If you liked Ghost Story, I also recommend The Outsider by Stephen King, The Hunger by Alma Katsu, Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones.

Happy reading 👻

About Me

IMG_1517.jpg

Ms.Bjork here and I love reading.  Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed the company of a good book.  Books are also a way that I get through the stress of living - nothing like escaping in a good story!  My career as a mental health counselor can be very intense at times - reading and running are the two main ways that I utilize self-care to support my own mental health and wellbeing.  Before starting this blog, in 2020 I read 128 books.  At the end of the year, I was like Dang, that's a lot of books! How can I get out there and tell people what I think? And so Ms.Bjork Reads was born.
