How The One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House (Click Here To Buy)

★★★★☆

How The One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House by Cherie Jones is a fiction book set in the Caribbean following a number of inter-related characters.

I checked this book out from the library and read it while I was on leave from having shoulder surgery.

Lala is in an abusive relationship with Adan, a robber who killed Mrs. Whalen's husband during a robbery gone wrong. Mrs. Whalen struggles to move forward. Tone, Adan's best friend, is hopelessly in love with Lala and makes money by selling his body to tourists. These 4 character's stories of violence are set against a backdrop of Barbados, what many call paradise. Through learning each character's history, you can see how they got to the point they're at - but it's still a surprise how they end up by the last page.

Trigger warning this book has a lot of violence, much of which is pretty heavy and sad - but it's also honest with vivid character development that weaves through multiple generations and multiple perspectives. With no one-armed characters, the book claims it's story from local folklore passed down from grandmother to granddaughter with the message that you should listen to your mother.

Fun Fact: Jones is also a lawyer

If you liked How The One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House, I also recommend Of Women and Salt by Gabriella Garcia, These Ghosts Are Family by Maisy Card, The Mothers by Brit Bennett, and Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson.

Happy reading -

About Me

Ms.Bjork here and I love reading.  Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed the company of a good book.  Books are also a way that I get through the stress of living - nothing like escaping in a good story!  My career as a mental health counselor can be very intense at times - reading and running are the two main ways that I utilize self-care to support my own mental health and wellbeing.  Before starting this blog, in 2020 I read 128 books.  At the end of the year, I was like Dang, that's a lot of books! How can I get out there and tell people what I think? And so Ms.Bjork Reads was born.
