★★★★☆

Monster by Walter Dean Meyers is a YA novel about a 16 year old on trial for life in prison.

I checked this book out from the library as a "return when you can."

Steve Harmon is 16 years old and on trial for the part that he played in a robbery that went wrong and left a man dead. Steve's job was to make sure the store was clear, is the death his fault? Should he go away for murder for the rest of his life? That's what he is in court to determine. Unable to process the situation, Steve decides to keep a journal where he keeps track of the trial as if it were a movie. What follows is a mix between screenwriting and journal entry.

An important work in YA fiction that addresses relevant and vital issues. A read for YA and adults alike. For those who enjoy procedural books, as it is all about a court hearing. Heard it was recently made into a movie on Netflix.

If you liked Monster, I also recommend My Time Will Come by Ian Manuel, The Nickel Boys by Colston Whitehead, Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson, and The Executioner's Song by Norman Mailer.

Happy reading -

About Me

IMG_1517.jpg

Ms.Bjork here and I love reading.  Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed the company of a good book.  Books are also a way that I get through the stress of living - nothing like escaping in a good story!  My career as a mental health counselor can be very intense at times - reading and running are the two main ways that I utilize self-care to support my own mental health and wellbeing.  Before starting this blog, in 2020 I read 128 books.  At the end of the year, I was like Dang, that's a lot of books! How can I get out there and tell people what I think? And so Ms.Bjork Reads was born.
