My Heart is A Chainsaw (Click Here To Buy)

★★★☆☆ (3.5 Stars)

My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones is a horror book about a girl convinced she is living in a slasher movie.

I checked this book out from the library and read it in this $30 craigslist recliner using The Bookseat that was gifted to me after I was slashed for shoulder surgery and recovering.

Jade loves slasher movies. I mean seriously she loves them so much she writes all her history papers about them. It’s with this knowledge that Jade starts to notice the signs pointing to the fact that there is going to be a slasher in her town. When dead bodies start piling up, Jade discovers that not only might she actually be right, but it could also be up to her to save the town.

This book is so meta: its a slasher that spends half the time talking about other slashers. Had I seen more of these, I probably would have given the book a higher rating. It is clear that Jones loves slashers and there are absolutely people out there who would give this book 6 stars, its just that because I was unfamiliar with a lot of the films, I kind of felt like an outsider reading the book. It reminded me of when I read Danse Macabe by Stephen King and made me feel like I needed to do a lot of outside research. The slasher plot line was good tho and I was kept gory and guessing. If you are a slasher trivia queen, this is your book.

I have also read The Only Good Indians by this author and recommend it.

If you liked My Heart is a Chainsaw, I also recommend A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay, The Hunger by Alma Katsu, Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and The Devil in Silver by Victor LaValle.

Happy reading 🔪

About Me

IMG_1517.jpg

Ms.Bjork here and I love reading.  Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed the company of a good book.  Books are also a way that I get through the stress of living - nothing like escaping in a good story!  My career as a mental health counselor can be very intense at times - reading and running are the two main ways that I utilize self-care to support my own mental health and wellbeing.  Before starting this blog, in 2020 I read 128 books.  At the end of the year, I was like Dang, that's a lot of books! How can I get out there and tell people what I think? And so Ms.Bjork Reads was born.
