Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark is a historical horror fiction novella about the Ku Klux Klan consisting of real monsters and the bad-ass Black women who hunt them down.
I checked this out from the library and read it on my Kindle.
Maryse is the main character who uses a sword that sings with the voices of the fallen, Chef is the WWI Veteran/lesbian explosives expert, and Sadie is the sharpshooter with a sharper tongue. Together they fight Ku Kluxes, white monsters with pointy white heads and six eyes who go around the south disguised as white Klan members. When a deeply hate-filled being by the name of Butcher Clyde comes to town, the trio, along with a Gullah woman and the ring of Shouters must stop him before he releases the Grand Cyclops and ends the world as we know it.
Extremely well written and decisively descriptive in its monsters and bloody action sequences, Ring Shout is a thrill to read. Clark is able to tackle serious themes of hatred and racism in a way that is true and totally unique. I would 10/10 recommend this book!
Clark has written a number of other books including some non-fiction under the name Dexter Gabriel. I am adding his book The Haunting of Tram Car 015 to my TBR.
If you liked Ring Shout, I also recommend Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff, Kindred by Octavia Butler, Pet by Akwaeke Emezi, and The Changeling by Victor LaValle.
