The Devil in Silver (Click Here To Buy)

★★★★☆

The Devil in Silver by Victor LaValle is a fiction book about a half buffalo half human monster in a state mental hospital.

I read this on my Kindle checked out from the library and read it on the beach to fufill my beach reads on #BookBingoNW2021

Pepper was wrongfully admitted to a psychiatric facility after getting in a fight with three plain clothes officers who he didn't know were cops. After being admitted to the ward, he was medicated, despite not having any history of mental illness ro related symptoms. What was originally supposed to be a 72 hour stay stretches into months when Pepper is unable to keep his cool. It is during this time that he first meets The Devil, a patient/montster who lives on the abandoned second floor and hunts/kills the patients. Pepper teams up with three other patients to develop a plan to defeat the monster and escape from the hospital.

This book was a'ight. Having quite a bit of experience working in and with mental hospitals, it was a bit frustrating the stereotyped and assumptive aspects of the development of the plot centered around the functioning of these psychiatric facilities. Much of it felt based on One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. I wish it was scarier but I did appreciate how much LaValle packs into and develops his novels.

I have read The Changeling and Big Machine by LaValle. The Changeling was my favorite book I read in 2020 and I recommend it to everyone.

If you liked The Devil in Silver, I also recommend One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey, A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay, Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen, and Bird Box by Josh Mailerman.

Happy reading!

About Me

Ms.Bjork here and I love reading.  Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed the company of a good book.  Books are also a way that I get through the stress of living - nothing like escaping in a good story!  My career as a mental health counselor can be very intense at times - reading and running are the two main ways that I utilize self-care to support my own mental health and wellbeing.  Before starting this blog, in 2020 I read 128 books.  At the end of the year, I was like Dang, that's a lot of books! How can I get out there and tell people what I think? And so Ms.Bjork Reads was born.
