The Girl with the Louding Voice (Click Here To Buy)

★★★★☆

The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Daré is a fiction book about a Nigerian girl who experiences a lot of trauma but holds on to her dream to get an education.

I read this on my Kindle on loan from the library.

Adunni is a 14 year old girl who we meet shortly after her mother has passed away. While she is still grieving, her father marries her off to an old man to be his third wife. All that Adunni wants is to go to school, but this is no longer possible as a wife who’s purpose is to birth boys. After a horrible misunderstanding stemming from the death of one of the wives, Adunni is forced to run away to the big city of Lagos where she gets a job as a housemaid. Her boss, Big Madam, beats her daily but Adunni does not let this bring her down. When she learns about a prestigious scholarship offered to girls her age, Adunni starts to brush up on her English by reading books and with the help of a woman who lives down the street so that she can finally find her “louding” voice.

Written in first person using broken English, Daré gives voice to the girls of Nigeria who are sold into the domestic slave trade, illegally married, and taught that they have no say in their worth. An inspiring story about following your dreams. I also learned quite a bit about Nigerian culture from the “Facts” that open most chapters.

If you liked The Girl with the Louding Voice, I also recommend Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Educated by Tara Westover, and My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite.

happy reading.

About Me

IMG_1517.jpg

Ms.Bjork here and I love reading.  Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed the company of a good book.  Books are also a way that I get through the stress of living - nothing like escaping in a good story!  My career as a mental health counselor can be very intense at times - reading and running are the two main ways that I utilize self-care to support my own mental health and wellbeing.  Before starting this blog, in 2020 I read 128 books.  At the end of the year, I was like Dang, that's a lot of books! How can I get out there and tell people what I think? And so Ms.Bjork Reads was born.
