The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw is a series of nine short stories about Black women exploring their humanity, their sexuality, their bodies; and how that exploration intersects with their lived experience in the Black church.
I read this as an audiobook checked out from the library.
The quiet honesty hidden within these stories is what stays with me most. From a woman in love with her best friend in Eula to a girl learning about her mother’s affair with the town preacher in Peach Cobbler to a woman finding what it takes to open her heart to a man in How to Make Love to a Physicist, each of Philyaw’s stories cut to the core. The descriptions are so divine they edge on lyrical. Family dynamics often play a part in these stories, as well as challenging what has been taught as right or good in relation to religion.
If you liked The Secret Lives of Church Ladies, I also recommend Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg, Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot, The Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi, and An American Marriage by Tayari Jones.
Happy reading!
