The Truths We Hold is a memoir by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris

I read this as an audiobook on loan from the library read by the author. I loved listening to Vice President-elect Harris read this book to me! It was intriguing to learn more about her career history as a prosecutor in California. Harris talks about working on the crime division prosecuting homicide and sexual assault cases before moving on to work in the Children’s Services Devision prosecuting abuse and neglect cases. After that, Harris became the District Attorney. During this time, she worked primarily on a program called Back on Track, which aimed to reduce recidivism for first time non violent offenders. From there, Harris became the Attorney General of California. This was when everything was happening with the housing crisis and oh my goodness did Harris fight against the banks! Harris also fought for same sex marriages and even officiated the first couple ❤︎ Harris campaigned and won the CA Senate seat during the same election that Trump was elected president and fought against family separation at the borders as well as questioning Brett Kavanaugh during the Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings.

Harris talks a lot about her career, which is well-written and easy to follow, but she also talks about her personal life. To start off with, Harris loves her mother. As a woman who also loves her mother, I loved hearing her talk about how important her mother was in her life. Harris also talks about meeting and marrying her husband, Doug Emhoff. Idk about you, but I am definitely on #teamdoug

If you liked The Truths We Hold, I also recommend both A Promised Land and The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama, Just Mercy by Brian Stevenson, and Evicted by Matthew Desmond.

Happy Reading!

About Me

IMG_1517.jpg

Ms.Bjork here and I love reading.  Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed the company of a good book.  Books are also a way that I get through the stress of living - nothing like escaping in a good story!  My career as a mental health counselor can be very intense at times - reading and running are the two main ways that I utilize self-care to support my own mental health and wellbeing.  Before starting this blog, in 2020 I read 128 books.  At the end of the year, I was like Dang, that's a lot of books! How can I get out there and tell people what I think? And so Ms.Bjork Reads was born.
