The Undocumented Americans (Click Here To Buy)
★★★★☆

The Undocumented Americans by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio is a non-fiction book documenting the experience of undocumented immigrants in America.
I read this as an audiobook on loan from the library. The book was read by the author.
The book traces the author's personal experience of undocumented immigration interlaced with stories of her parents as well as other people who have immigrated to America and are not citizens. She speaks with day laborers, older adults, and youth ranging from Flint, MI to New York, NY, to Miami, FL. Cornejo Villavicencio seeks to break the stereotypes connected with the idea of "illegal immigrants" and when she can't, she finds a way to humanize them. Each story is like a vignette that all combine to tell a truer, richer story of undocumented life in America.
As you have probably noticed, I like to recommend four books at the end of my book reviews. I struggled to find books to recommend after I read this book and I would like to use that as a growing opportunity to instead tell you about one book that I recommend and three books that I am adding to my TBR to increase my cultural competency in this area. So, if you liked The Undocumented Americans, I also recommend The Devi's Highway by Luis Alberto Urrea and the books being added to my TBR are Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue, American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins, and The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henriquez.
Do you have any recommendations similar to The Undocumented Americans that you would recommend to me?
