The Untelling by Tayari Jones is a fiction drama about a woman who thinks she is pregnant but it turns out she’s not.
I read this as on my Kindle checked out from the library.
Aria is in her 20s and knows without a doubt that she's pregnant after she starts waking up sick. She tells her boyfriend, who proposes, and then her family, from which she has a traumatic history with - her father and baby sister were killed in a car crash. Only then does she go to the doctor where she is told that not only is she not pregnant, but she has a medical condition that will keep her from ever having children. This is when the book lives up to it's title as Aria has to untell people about the pregnancy, which has direct reprocussions on all the relationships in her life.
I have read everything Jones has written and I think Silver Sparrow is my favorite. This was my last of Jones' books to read and, even though it was her second book, it was different than all the others. What I love about Jones' other books is how she tells complicated stories from multiple perspectives. This book did not have the multiple perspectives but it did have the complicated situation.
If you liked The Untelling, I also recommend The Mothers by Brit Bennett, The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw, Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams, and Severance by Ling Ma.
Happy reading, xo.
