This is Ear Hustle (Click Here To Buy)

★★★★☆

This is Ear Hustle: Unflinching Stories of Everyday Prison Life by Nigel Poor and Erlonne Woods is a series of interviews with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals

I used to listen to this when it was a podcast and when I found out they were making a book, I instantly put it on hold at the library.

Erlonne Woods was just a young man when he was sentenced 31 years to life for an attempted robbery that left his best friend dead at the hands of police. Over 20 years later, while serving his sentence in San Quentin State Prison, Woods met Nigel Poor, a volunteer for the prison who also works as a photography professor and visual artist. Together the two developed a podcast called Ear Hustle where they tell stories and interview inmates about life in prison. The book has the same style of stories as well as bit more on Woods and Poor’s lives.

As I mentioned above, I am a huge Ear Hustle the podcast fan so I was very excited about this book. The stories are honest and told in interview style with some illustrations throughout but I think the best format for this remains as a podcast…Or maybe as an audiobook depending on how they narrate it. Either way I love these folks 11/10 would recommend Ear Hustle the podcast.

If you liked This is Ear Hustle, I also recommend The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton, The Autobiography of Gucci Mane by Gucci Mane, My Time Will Come by Ian Manuel, and Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman.

Happy reading,

About Me

IMG_1517.jpg

Ms.Bjork here and I love reading.  Ever since I was a child, I have enjoyed the company of a good book.  Books are also a way that I get through the stress of living - nothing like escaping in a good story!  My career as a mental health counselor can be very intense at times - reading and running are the two main ways that I utilize self-care to support my own mental health and wellbeing.  Before starting this blog, in 2020 I read 128 books.  At the end of the year, I was like Dang, that's a lot of books! How can I get out there and tell people what I think? And so Ms.Bjork Reads was born.
