Unbound: My Story of Liberation and the Birth of the Me Too Movement (Click Here To Buy)
★★★★★

Unbound: My Story of Liberation and the Birth of the Me Too Movement by Tarana Burke is a memoir about the woman who created #metoo
I read this an audiobook checked out from the library and read by the author.
Burke chronicles her life growing up in the Bronx, going to college in Alabama, working with young girls in Selma, and finally her move to Philadelphia. Along the way, she shares her painful memories of a number of times that she was raped or sexually assaulted. Burke discusses how each of these experiences shaped her initially as well as how she worked through them later. Burke explores how she came to work with young brown and Black girls who have experienced sexual violence and the importance of making them feel seen. Even more importantly, Burke talks about times when she feels she fell short of her goal and how she believes she should have responded differently and why.
I unexpectedly loved this book. Burke is such a powerful force, which comes through in her writing - especially as she reads it. She has been through so much and is still out there on the front lines fighting for girls who don't have a voice.
Favorite quotes:
"I am hardwired to respond to injustice"
"There is no here without where I was"
"Is the core of healing empathy and courage?"
"Sexual violence doesn't discriminate but the response to it does"
I have also read You Are Your Best Thing, which was edited by Burke and Brené Brown. That is how I found out about this book.
If you liked Unbound, I also recommend The Purpose of Power by Alicia Garza, When They Call You A Terrorist by Patrisse Cullors, Somebody's Daughter by Ashley Ford, and I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.
Happy Reading.
